Elles aussi sont amenées à se transformer, poussées par l'évolution en toute chose et surtout celle de leurs ennemis. Quand et pourquoi innovent-elles dans la manière dont elles combattent ? Sont-elles condamnées, si elles ne sont pas assez rapides, à refaire la guerre précédente ? Est-il plus facile d'innover en temps de paix, ou au contraire en temps de guerre, au contact des réalités ? Comment s'articule, dans ces efforts, l'action des institutions internes aux armées avec les pouvoirs externes - de l'" arrière ", du pouvoir politique et peut-être surtout de l'ennemi ? C'est à toutes ces questions, parmi beaucoup d'autres, que répond Michel Goya avec une grande hauteur de vue.
Abordant le phénomène de l'innovation militaire dans sa globalité, il décrit successivement la mue de l'armée prussienne face aux révolutions (1789-1871), la transformation de l'armée française pendant la Grande Guerre, l'évolution de la Royal Navy britannique (1880-1945), la stratégie de bombardement allié contre le IIIe Reich, la naissance et la place de l'arme atomique dans la guerre froide, l'évolution de l'armée française pendant la guerre d'Algérie, enfin celle de l'US Army à partir de 1945 - autant d'exemples qui racontent et démontrent la nécessaire adaptation de l'art militaire et ses principales innovations depuis deux siècles.

Don Julián es el resultado de la revisión y retitulación por parte de Juan Goytisolo de su novela Reivindicación del Conde don Julián. La radical propuesta julianesca de hace más de treinta años sigue sin embargo vigente hoy en día. A medida que asistimos en la esfera internacional a la propagación de los extremismos nacionales y religiosos, y a la perpetuación de los mitos esencialistas que limitan la definición de las identidades nacionales, la oposición de Goytisolo a esta misma deformación historiográfica en la esfera española sigue imponiéndose como una  necesidad inexorable.

Esta edición se basa en las revisiones de Goytisolo a Reivindicación del Conde don Julián, se indican en las notas las diferencias más importantes entre las dos versiones y se amplía en nueva introducción las polémicas críticas que ha suscitado la novela a lo largo de los años y la evolución de la obra del autor.
